Many students in teacher education are already working in the teaching profession whilst
studying. This presents universities of teacher education with a dilemma between the need to ensure professional standards and the necessity of filling staff shortages. They respond
to this challenge by offering new training and further education opportunities. This article examines how the early entry into the profession can be successfully reconciled with
both the students’ theoretical and practical training and their professional development.
The analysis is based on 24 structured interviews with students and 20 structured interviews with lecturers from the Primary and Lower Secondary Level I departments at the University of Teacher Education Bern. The results show that professional experience facilitates reflection on course content but often leads students to prioritise practical work over their studies at university, which jeopardises the quality of the programme. University support for students during their practical work experience is therefore essential.
