Teaching involves a wide variety of tasks, many of which are quite challenging as they are strongly interwoven with moral values and ethical aspects. The moral dimension contributes largely to the attractiveness of this profession. Still, while teachers predominantly experience positive emotions and high levels of job satisfaction throughout their professional careers, they also might suffer from the sometimes stressful requirements of this occupation. This contribution integrates the moral dimension into a comprehensive framework of teacher professionalism. Based upon this comprehensive model, it will be discussed whether or to what extent teachers’ sense of professional ethics can be regarded a major driver or inhibitor to their positive emotions, job satisfaction and health. The question will be examined why a teacher’s skill to sense and morally reflect their professional behavior can be considered both a blessing and a curse with regard to their job satisfaction. The conclusion draws upon a theoretical model on moral stress and health in the teaching profession and gives an outlook on options to foster teachers’ health and prevent teacher burnout.
