Career entry is a key phase in the professionalisation of teachers. For the first time, they are confronted with the full responsibility and complexity of demanding requirements. This article highlights the tension between closeness and distance in the relationship with pupils, which is a central challenge in finding one’s role as a teacher. Interviews with teachers at the beginning of their second year in the profession show that consciously shaping relationships is key to the professional role of teachers. Reflectively dealing with the closeness-distance antinomy promotes a balanced Teachers’ professional self-understanding.
