In contrast to Standard German (StG) or English, word-initial bilabial and alveolar stops are traditionally not aspirated in Swiss German (SwG), and typically exhibit short voice onset times (VOT). Throughout the last century, however, more and more aspirated forms have been reported for SwG, but empirical evidence on the factors driving this change is thin. This study is the first to investigate SwG VOT in a large and balanced sample of 1000 speakers from 125 localities. The results suggest an apparent-time change, depending on factors related to the specific word as well as to the region. Furthermore, our models revealed that more frequent use and more favorable attitudes towards StG trigger longer VOT. This effect is particularly interesting against the backdrop of the special diglossic situation in German-speaking Switzerland and suggests that linguistic practices and attitudes can be important motivators of sound change.
