The article gives an insight into the research project « Teaching History in a CompetenceOriented Way » (Bern University of Teacher Education). It asks whether the postulate of competence orientation has also arrived in practice with the introduction of Curriculum 21. The case study examines whether history teachers plan and conduct their lessons in a competence-oriented way, what pedagogical-psychological and history didactic knowledge they express, and what kind of beliefs guide them. In addition to the study’s underlying research perspectives, the design and analytical tools are presented, and initial results are outlined.
